"And the Academy Award goes to…the show!"

Last Sunday, more than an estimated 41.3 million viewers tuned in to Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin as they hosted the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. The stars of Hollywood shined from their arrival on the red carpet to the end of the night, when history was made.

Kathryn Bigelow, ex-wife of nominated director, James Cameron, received an Oscar for Best Director. It marked the first time the Oscar was presented to a woman. Bigelow's "Hurt Locker," a film about a US Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team during the Iraq War, also took home Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Film Editing.

Other major winners of the night included: Christoph Waltz (Best Supporting Actor, 'Inglourious Basterds'), Mo'Nique (Best Supporting Actress, 'Precious'), Jeff Bridges (Best Actor, 'Crazy Heart'), and Sandra Bullock (Best Actress, 'The Blind Side').

Bullock was also voted as the Best Dressed for her Marchesa gown on the Red Carpet according to E! Fashion Police, joined by Ryan Reynolds as Best Dressed Male. Charlize Theron and Jeff Bridges were voted Worst Dressed by the critical police.

The Night also featured a fantastic opening number by the one and only Neil Patrick Harris, beautiful choreography by Alan Shankman to music and scores from the nominated films, and there was a great tribute to the late John Hughes, who directed many classic 80s movies such as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakfast Club, and Home Alone. Hughes' family, who was in attendance, received a standing ovation after being recognized by some of the iconic faces he had discovered such as Molly Ringwold, Anthony Michael Hall, Ally Sheedy, and Matthew Broderick.

In my opinion, this award show was one of my favorite in years--perhaps due to the increase in best picture nominees from 5 to 10, or the more popular-based movies being nominated (like Disney's "Up!" and "Inglourious Basterds"), or maybe I was just lured in by the high fashion? Either way, with the exception of the Academy excluding Farrah Fawcett from the Memoriam section, the show went off without a hitch, and was definitely a great way to end my Spring Break!
