Stop Tightening; Loosen that Worn-Belt
Save Some Cash!

Issue date: 4/2/09 Section: Opinion
I never really thought twice about the price of products. Four dollars for shampoo was never considered too much; it was a necessity. Ten dollars for a movie; no biggie, it starred Ben Affleck. Only $30 for those jeans; they made me look taller. Forty bucks for dinner; who cared? Since I started college, and ever since the recession, I have been tightening that worn-out belt and stretching every last Washington.
Since the problems with the economy began, every product seems more expensive than ever. But, I've discovered some great ways to save money and still buy awesome items and enjoy those fun activities.
• Shop the sales -- See that wonderful new purse? Even though it may be tempting, don't give in! Since the recession started, stores want your business, and have their sales even sooner than ever before. That jacket can wait until it is marked 40% off.
• Clearance isn't the end of the world -- I know, I know, clearance does not always have the best fashions, but there are some classic, timeless pieces found in those racks. Dress shirts and straight skirts never go out of style. Plus, stores even now have those pieces discounted even more, because they need your business.
• Don't underestimate coupons -- they're lifesavers! Since the recession, The Philadelphia Inquirer's coupon section has grown! Plus, check the sales. CVS gives ExtraBuck rewards, and when you combine coupons and ExtraBucks, you can buy Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner for $.50 a bottle! Now, that's a deal!
• Eating out can be fun -- Signing up for chain restaurant emails may have clogged up your inbox in the past, but now, restaurants send coupons. I just received one from Ruby Tuesday's - buy one entrée, get one free! Get an entrée free! I never thought I would hear the day.
• Don't buy it; borrow it! -- Get out of Blockbuster and over to the Free Library! The library carries tons of new books, DVDs, and CDs. No membership fees required, just a card, which all residents can receive for free!! Get great, new movies, such as Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, The House Bunny, and even oldies, but goodies, such as The Breakfast Club. Find your local branch at freelibrary.org or buckslib.org.

There are always some deals for things that you need or want, it's just a matter of finding them. Another tip is to check out prices online. You can often find things online for cheaper than they are sold at the store, even after adding shipping charges. (Continued…)
