Rainy days can feel so miserable for us as we try to dash from building to building or into our car without the sun and with plenty of puddles in our way. Until the rain stops, we all have to find a way to keep our spirits up. For the students of the Alpha House, one of the best ways to do this is with music. Who else should provide that music than Holy Family's own Tiger Tones. On April 3, 2009, despite the pouring rain, all the young children made their way through the storm to Holy Family Hall where the campus' musical ensemble provided wonderful tunes that are still ringing in my head. They went through great lengths for great music, and in the end it was only until everyone was singing that the rain stopped.

The Tiger Tones is made up of many parts. Music director Bill Monaghan led the group of students putting smiles on the faces of the children. Female vocals were done by Meg Meyers, Krystle Toth, Stephanie Morgan, Nicole Elizabeth Keller, and Joyce Kelly, while the male vocals were handled by Daniel Gormley and Joseph Cuozzo. As far as instruments go, Michelle Begnaud and Staci Altomari played guitar, Sandy Sykes played flute, and David Young played on the drums. David Young does more than just play drums for the Alpha House children, though. He is a part of the work-study program at the Alpha House and helped make this event possible with kindergarten teacher Georgia Weiss. The students cheered David on as he and the Tiger Tones performed amazingly.

The experience was very interactive as the Tiger Tones played several songs that required the aid of students through dancing, suggesting, and singing along. Among the songs played were "You're a Grand Old Flag," "This Old Man," "Mary Had A Little Lamb," "Itsy Bitsy Spider," and more. When performing "Wheels on the Bus," one student suggested that "Mommies on the bus go Shh shhh shhhh!" Another student suggested that God has not only families, flowers, and more in his hands, but also "toys" and "the Power Rangers" during the performance of "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." There was even a performance of "the number song in rock and roll style," after one of the children asked them to perform more. The children had a great time and I am sure they would love to hear more in the future.

The Alpha House went through great lengths to hear great music. While it was a soaked journey to see the Tiger Tones, it's nice to believe that the power of music helped the sun shine down long enough for a peaceful trip back to the classrooms of the Alpha House. I had a great time hearing the Tiger Tones perform and the teachers had a great time as well. If you ever get the chance to see Holy Family's Tiger Tones perform, I recommend you do it. Thank you for the sensational music and for letting the sun shine.

For those interested in enrolling their students into the Alpha House's Summer Enrichment Programs for young children, please call 215-632-3366. The two programs are for Art & Literature in June and Reading & Math in August. For more information, call that number and ask for Georgia.
