And The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway:
A Look at Genesis
Robert Hettinger
Issue date: 4/2/09 Section: Entertainment
With the three remaining members, the sound of Genesis went from that of progressive juggernaut to a more pop-sounding band. Phil Collins took most of the blame for this transition, since a lot of his solo work resembled the current Genesis sound. Though their style did change, they still retained their incorporation of themes. One of their most notorious songs was "Land of Confusion," which reflected the political turmoil of the Reagen era. The song's video featured very odd-looking puppets of the band as they played the song. Ironically, they lost MTV's Video of the Year award to Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer." The band finally split up in 1997. However, the trio did reunite a few years ago. There were rumors of Peter Gabriel joining them, but they never came to fruition.
Genesis is very unique in the sense that their earlier material sounds almost completely different from their later material. There are three box sets that chronicle the band's music and are well worth the money. Genesis presented an image and songs that identified progressive rock. Though their sound changed over the years, the music they made was always great and hopefully at some point there will be a full-fledged reunion of the classic Genesis line-up.
