Have you noticed the financial crisis developing right before our eyes - this country's worst since the Great Depression? Most of us know it exists but don't understand it to the extent we should.
I randomly surveyed over 120 Penn students, and only 31 percent reported that they were "extremely confident" or "pretty confident" in their ability to understand the current financial dilemma.

It should have been a routine play, a no-brainer. Down just a touchdown with more than 14 minutes left to play, Dartmouth faced 4th-and-10 on its own 38. What ensued should never have decided the game.
But punter Brian Scullin never put the ball to his foot, and instead tossed a short pass to special teamer Matthew Dornak.

It seems we're getting shocking news from everywhere. The country is facing an economic crisis, North Korea is resuming their nuclear activities and Clay Aiken has finally stepped out of the closet. Now as shocking as Gaykin's, I mean Aiken's, coming out is, what is more shocking is some of the news that hasn't been reported by our laser-focused media.

If an Orthodox Jewish transsexual desires to transition, which will set him on a course of taking hormones and finally having SRS [Sex Reassignment Surgery], is this permitted per halakha? Are there any differences if this is MtF (male to female) or FtM (female to male) transitioning? What prohibitions, if any, does this course of action violate? Does pikuach nefesh [danger of life] play a role in determining the halakha? And assuming that someone goes forward with this surgery, rightly or wrongly, under halakha, is this person seen as being the sex which he was born, or the one he presents as and physically resembles? This is aside from the question of how Orthodox Jews ought to treat such a person on a whole.

The Office of Enrollment Services recently recommended that the $8,000 a year merit-based Trustee Scholarship given to twenty students each semester be eliminated. Although the fate of the scholarship has yet to be determined, President Dan Weiss said the decision has less to do with the argument against merit-based awards than it does with a reallocation of funds to need-based scholarships.

To understand is not to condone.
Unfortunately, this is difficult for some to comprehend. Some prefer to operate under the assumption that all things are equal, and nuance does not exist. In their minds, to write about a topic is to legitimize it, to discuss something forbidden is suddenly to claim it is permitted.

Hezbollah ate my homework
At another school, I had a kid do his paper on Hezbollah, and he copied most of the paper from their web site. It was the Arabic, among other things, that gave it away. But when I busted him, I offered him the choice of being turned in to the dean or to Hezbollah.
